Google, Killing the Atmosphere One Cup of Tea at a Time

This article is claiming that computers and internet relates searches cause a large amount of the worlds greenhouse gas emissions. The estimation is that two internet searches on Google is equivalent to that of boiling a cup of water for tea. This claim is based on factual data that is calculated by physicists. This data is not based on the emissions from computers but the energy consumed by computers. As well as how much energy is required to facilitate Google’s 200 million internet search queries daily.

  1. I think blogs work like the old telephone game--people keep posting and re-posting stories and they keep changing (or omitting key details). For instance, the article you link to refers to heating a kettle of water for tea, and you talk about heating a cup of water. Big difference. And is this a conventional stove top or a microwave--I don't think the article even covers that. theydo say that an internet search for them means something taking a few minutes taking several tries, not the standard type-and-go search that most of us do.

Don't get me wrong, this is an interesting debate over the environmental impact of common activities, I just wonder if the facts about the research methodology could be a little clearer. How many people know how much water a kettle holds anyway? Perhaps the precise facts don't matter.
